I'd never even heard of gout. ?Actually it was kind of ironic. ?I think the weekend my toe started hurting I recall an ad on the radio for some super gout med and the crystals. ?I don't know what it was, and I still don't. ?Anyhow. ?Long story, not short, but condensed. ?I'm 33. ?I might weight a little too much, I enjoy meat and alcohol especially stouts and ales. ?I have moderately high blood pressure. ?Finally I decided I'd go on bp meds, and try to clean up just a little and loose a little weight. ?I was prescribed lipinsol and started eating less meat and more veggies and fruits. ?

    ?

The weekend going into 2 weeks and 5 pounds lighter I celebrated with a ribeye and 3 black and tans. ?This wasn't atypical from the past. ?However the pain the following morning was. ?I could hardly walk because of my right big toe hurting like heck. ?I had a follow up appointment for the bp meds the following monday. ?I said the bp med is working great, but my toe hurts like heck and the bp has gone up a bit because I'm taking boatloads of ibuprophen. ?She looked at it and said it might be gout. ? They drew blood and gave me some diclofenac (sp) for pain. ?I few days later my toe was still hurting as much as did before. ?I think the ibu worked better than the prescribed stuff, but neither was worth a darn. ?

    ?

Finally a few days later I decide to look up this mysterious gout cuz my toe is still hurting like heck and now feeling swollen. ?While researching I was thinking to myself this looks like the worse curse anyone could ever have. ?How did I get stuck with it? ?Everything good in life just suddenly rescinded? ?I also noticed quite a few cases where it was a side effect of the lipinsol. ?I've also realized I've probably been agrivating it even since the diagnosis by eating pork chops and ribs and such. ?Finally friday (which was a day short of a week) of pain I call the doctor and ask why is this still hurting? ?I also request a change for bp med just because of the risk. ?That day my bp med was changed. ?I was also given some allopurinol. ?Those two items (not sure which) pretty much immediately made my symptoms reside. ?Yesterday I walked around quite a bit and maybe over did it, ?but it feels pretty decent. ?Today I'm staying off of it. ?95% of the pain is gone as i write this.

    ?

So now I'm left pondering. ?Here is my impression: I understand I might of been a decent risk before and the lipinsol put it over the edge? ?I don't know what acid level in my blood was when i was in pain, i didn't even know to ask. ?How do I proceed? ? From my current understanding by reading this board its all about balancing (ie lowering) the acid level in my blood. ? So let me get it straight? ?I now have a fair amount of crystals built up around my toe (not really visable mind you). ?If I let my acid level get about 5 (whatever units) the growth with get bigger. ?If it is less it will sllllooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwlllllllllyyyyyyyyyyyy desolve? ?How do you all get your blood tested? ?Is it something you have to go to the dr for??

    ?

I still can't fully bend this toe as much as my left toe. ?Will that get better or is that a side effect of the crystal build up? ?When will it resume full motion? ?

    ?

Am i on allopurinol forever now? ?Its going to be real tough to cut back on meat and beer. ?:/ ?Can I sue Lisinprol makers? ?I'm still pretty confused here. ?Should I look back and see what my acid level was on previous physicals? ?

    ?

I'm just looking for a better understanding of it all. ?I don't even know what to ask.?

Your dr. should be able to tell you what your level was. But it can drop when your having an attack. Once you get on the Allop and stay you may be one of the lucky ones who can go back to living a completly normal life as long as you stay on the Allop. Colchicine is your best bet to stop an attack dead in its tracks. Good luck Limpy

I was prescribed lipinsol and started eating less meat

    ?

Do you mean lisinopril, the ACE inhibitor? Ah, yes, I see your final paragraph.

    ?

I celebrated with a ribeye and 3 black and tans.

    ?

Gosh, if I had to pick?my single worst foor pain trigger it would be YUENGLING'S BLACK AND TAN (or is black and tan a generic.) Were you referring to the YUENGLING's. If so, try their annual BOCK BEER for a really crippling treat :D:D and their PORTER even worse. coolcool

    ?

Can I presume you are taking 300 mg. allopurinol. Once I started 15 years ago, I never had another acute attack. Yes, you need to take it every day of your life unless they invent something as good and cheaper.

Nah, don't sue the lisinopril people it's a good antihypertensive if you are a renin type hypertensive, but NEVER take a thiazide diuretic?they are deadly for gouties. The ACE inhibitors don;t work well for me…alll they do is cause an endless itchy cough, MONTH after MONTH.

If your allopurinol is effective you can kiss any dietary restriction goodbye (except maybe for the dark beers.) That's the beauty of allopurinol therapy.

As an aside, I never get any twinges from a regualr beer, PBR my current cheapy favorite, but often I drink a 6-pack/day? MHL, Coors regular, Heinekin, Labatt, etc. I hate light beers?like off tasting cold?water.

    ?

    So yes: ALLOPURINOL FOREVER.

Ah Zip, you just opened a can of worms or a window to the good ole days of the past, which ever way you want to take it.

    ?

I still got 12 or so cases of Huber's annual BOCK BEER?(only the cases) which I had bought about 1983/4/5 for less than 10 bucks a case. (I used their returnable bottles, they never broke, unless I could not wait to finish the fermentation, then Mother Nature would show me the power stored in a good, cold, or even more warm dark bock beer, for my home brew. Their dark bottles are nolonger in my possession.)

Living in blissful innocence=ignorance, those were the days my friend, I thought they'd never end until I stubbed my big toe at a camping/sailing trip and three day later my GP said: “You got GOUT!”? “What? What is GOUT???” It took me more than 25 years to find out. You and the other “old” gouties know my story too well.

Anyway, back to BOCK BEER: Have you ever had DOPPLE BOCK BEER??? ?A friend of mine in Germany worked in a brewery and had access to FREE BEER. mmm, that was good, so good, after 3-4 bottles I rode my bike home (at night) free-handed, without touching the handle bar and not falling or getting caught by the police. Society didn' look too favorable on teenagers (maybe I was a little older, I forgot) riding their bikes free-handed in the middle of the street. (Fifty some years ago there were far less cars on German streets than today.)

And to top it off: How about a Sam Adam's TRIPLE BOCK BEER??? I still got one (1) bottle left (now ~15 years old), waiting for THEE DAY to be consumed. You see, after all, there is still something waiting for ME in life!!!cool

Oh, by the way, I have started to brew my HansinNewMexico Stout again. Should be ready to bottle in 3-4 days.

My life started to pick up/look up a hell lot more/better some three months ago, when I began finishing off my HINMStout from two years ago.smile 1, at the most, 2 bottles at a time. So far so good! Since I quit the additional Probenecid, my SUA has gone up to 5-6, but no flares or attacks. (Haven't had any for almost a year now.)

Thank you all for the responses.

    ?

I drink all kinds of beers. ?Lion Stout is one of my favorite. ?That night I was drinking a black and tan, well its not a real black and tan. ?I substituted murphy's stout in place of the guiness. ?A real black and tan in my book is a bass/guiness mixture. ?I can't say I have too many beers waiting for me. ?I just finished off a bunch of dogfish head with a buddy a few weeks back. ?It was interesting. ?My wife has some new belgium la folie dated a few years back. ?

    ?

So far so good. ?I had to do a ton of walking today, even a bit of running. ?Foot is holding up well. ?

    ?

I haven't had any booze in over a week, well basically since I realize it might be bad. ?I have, however, had a lot of pork and some beef. ?I've been eating a beef shoulder roast for 2 days. ?

    ?

Right now I'm just on a 100 mg/day of allopurinol. ?I'll keep this up until I have my next appointment in about 3 weeks and request a retest to compare to the previous results. ?

    ?

Probably going to have a drink or two or more on wednesday night as I'm off on a business trip. ?I'll probably stick to scotch, tequilla, or coors light beer though. ?

Odo, I hope he gets your message!

And as my mother once said to me: “When the donkey feels its oats it goes dancing on ice” (and boy, did I get soaked and froze my ass off. I haven't fully recovered yet from that dance, even after 40 years. Didn't have anything to do with gout, though.)
