I have had gout since 2009. 3-4 flareups a year.

Now the last time I got a cold was in Feb 2013. Since then I have had several gout flareups until now but no cold. This year I have had at least 5-6 flareups.

During my recent severe attack 2 weeks back I started drinking for the first time baking soda with lime water every night and the gout went away almost immediately. And now I can eat any kind of red meat as long as I have the baking soda & lime. no gout. But I think eliminating gout made me get the cold which I now have after almost 3 years of without it.

So I am wondering if there is a connection between uric acid(acidity of the body), cold and gout. What I have noticed is that when I have a cold I dont have gout and vice versa.

They say that when you get a cold use steam therapy, warm your body etc to alleviate the symptoms of the cold.

And, when you have gout the reverse holds good because the body is warm especially the joint.

One thing is for sure I prefer the cold to gout.

It’s the first time I’ve heard any suggestion of links between the common cold and gout. I can’t think of any likely link, so I’d say it’s most likely to be coincidence.

What worries me most is that you’ve had gout over 5 years, and doing nothing to control uric acid. Also, there are dangers to taking baking soda without medical supervision.

If you need help with controlling uric acid safely, Rian, please ask in the new gout forum.
